A large flycatcher of the southwest States, rare north of Oregon. A large flycatcher that eats insects and also berries when available. Nests in cavities made by woodpeckers which is unique among flycatchers. Migrates south to Costa Rica for the winter.
Similar species:
A unique looking bird among our common bird species but very similar to other species in its genus such as the Great Crested Flycatcher. To date, no other Myiarchus flycatcher species has been recorded in our checklist area.
