A big loon that breeds in the far northern tundra and is an annual but uncommon wintering species in coastal waters of B.C. Our only record of a breeding plumaged adult in a lake in Hope was a spetacular discovery.
Similar species:
Most similar to the Common Loon, but is larger. This trait most useful when both species are being viewed together at the same time. The yellow bill and paler overall colouring helps set it apart from the Common Loon. See photos below.
